Sometimes referred to as “Sacred Hoops,” Dreamcatchers were traditionally used as talismans to protect sleeping people, usually children, from bad dreams and nightmares.
Native Americans believe that dreams, both good and bad fill the night air. When hung above the bed in a place where the morning sunlight can hit it, the dream catcher attracts and catches all sorts of dreams and thoughts into its webs.
Good dreams pass through and gently slide down the feathers to comfort the sleeper below. The dreamcatcher catches the bad dreams up in its protective net and destroys them, burned up in the light of day.
Dreamcatchers have become extremely popular outside the traditional Native American communities. Many of these new dreamcatchers bear little resemblance to traditional styles, and incorporate materials that would not be traditionally used. Many Native Americans have come to see these as over-commercialised, offensively misappropriated and misused by non-Natives.
However, many people can testify to the benefits they have received by using these products. Children and adults alike sleep better in their presence.
