Use this resin in charcoal burners and on incense burner sieves. Using a metal spoon, add a very small amount of resin on top of the hot charcoal releasing the fragrant incense smoke. Repeat as desired until the charcoal is exhausted. When finished, allow the charcoal to completely cool in the burner before discarding. When in doubt, dowse it with water.

Dammar varies in colour from clear to pale yellow, while the fossilised form is grey-brown. The name dammar is a Malay word meaning ‘resin’ or ‘torch made from resin’.

There are two further types of dammar, besides the gum. Mata kucing (‘cat’s eye’) is a crystalline resin, usually in the form of round balls.
Batu (‘stone’) is stone or pebble-shaped, opaque dammar collected from the ground.

Batik is made from dammar crystals dissolved in molten paraffin wax, to prevent the wax from cracking when it is drawn onto silk or rayon.
