Bismuth compounds account for about half the production of this metal. We see them in cosmetics, pigments; and a few pharmaceuticals, notably bismuth subsalicylate, used to treat diarrhea. The fact that it tends to expand substantially as it solidifies is responsible for some of its uses, such as in the casting of printing type. Also, It has unusually low toxicity for a heavy metal. As a result, a the toxicity of lead has become more apparent in recent years, there is an increasing use of bismuth alloys (presently about a third of bismuth production) as a replacement for lead. However, we still probably know it best as the main ingredient in stomach ache remedies such as Pepto-Bismol.
French scientist Claude Geoffroy discovered Bismuth as a chemical element in 1753. The origin of the name comes from the German words Weisse Masse meaning white mass
