Silicon Carbide or Carborundum

You find Silicon Carbide or Carborundum naturally only in minute quantities in certain types of meteorite and in corundum deposits. As a result virtually all the silicon carbide sold is synthetic. The naturally forming mineral that forms Silicon Carbide is moissanite.

Natural moissanite was first found in 1893 as a small component of the Canyon Diablo meteorite in Arizona. It was found by Doctor Ferdinand Henri Moissan. As a result, they named Moissanite after him several years later.

While rare on Earth, silicon carbide is remarkably common in space. Common form of stardust found around carbon-rich stars. Geologists have found examples of this stardust  in pristine condition in meteorites.
