There is also lots of information about Shungite from a mineral point of view. It is an elementary noncrystalline carbon with a metastable structure. Shungite is incapable of graphitization which means that it will not break down over time.
It is also used as a term to describe a sequence of Precambrian metamorphic rocks from the Karelia region of Russia containing such carbon. Trace amounts of fullerenes, meaning a series of hollow carbon molecules that form either a closed cage or a cylinder, have been reported from such rock. Shungite has a biogenic origin.
Originally described from Shun’ga area, Shun’ga village, Onega lake, Karelia Republic, Northern Region, Russia.
