What are Moon Phases?

Moon phases are the different appearances of the Moon as seen from Earth, which are caused by the relative positions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun. These phases cycle approximately every 29.5 days, known as a lunar month or lunation. Here are the primary phases of the Moon:

  1. New Moon: The Moon is between the Earth and the Sun, and its illuminated side is facing away from Earth. The Moon is not visible in the sky at this time.
  2. Waxing Crescent: Following the new moon, a small crescent of light starts to become visible on the right side of the Moon. This phase occurs as the Moon moves away from the Sun.
  3. First Quarter: The Moon is a quarter of the way through its cycle. Half of the Moon’s surface is illuminated on the right side, creating a half-moon appearance.
  4. Waxing Gibbous: More than half of the Moon is illuminated, but it is not yet full. The lighted portion continues to grow, moving from right to left.
  5. Full Moon: The Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, and the entire face of the Moon is illuminated and fully visible from Earth.
  6. Waning Gibbous: After the full moon, the illuminated portion starts to decrease. More than half of the Moon is still lit, but the lighted area is shrinking from right to left.
  7. Last Quarter: The Moon is three-quarters of the way through its cycle. Half of the Moon’s surface is illuminated on the left side, creating another half-moon appearance.
  8. Waning Crescent: Only a small crescent of light is visible on the left side of the Moon. The illuminated portion continues to shrink until the new moon phase.
