If you've been thinking about trying Reiki, it's completely natural to wonder what actually happens during a session. For many people, their first Reiki appointment feels like stepping into the unknown. The good news is that Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive therapy designed to help you relax and take time for yourself. Here's what you can expect.
Your practitioner will usually begin with a short conversation about how you're feeling and what has brought you to Reiki. You don't need to prepare in any special way. Simply wear comfortable clothing and arrive with an open mind. There are no expectations and nothing you need to "do" during the treatment.
You'll usually lie comfortably on a treatment couch, fully clothed, while your practitioner gently places their hands either lightly on or just above different areas of your body. Many people experience a deep sense of relaxation during Reiki. Some notice feelings of warmth or tingling, while others simply enjoy the opportunity to rest quietly. Every experience is unique, and there's no right or wrong way to experience Reiki.
Following your treatment, your practitioner may invite you to sit quietly for a few moments before getting up. Some people leave feeling refreshed and energised, while others notice a deep sense of calm or simply feel as though they've had a restorative rest. You may wish to drink plenty of water and allow yourself some quiet time afterwards if possible.
Many people choose Reiki as part of their overall wellbeing routine because it offers dedicated time to relax and reconnect with themselves. While experiences vary from person to person, Reiki is valued by many for the sense of peace and relaxation it can bring. If you're curious but still unsure, remember that your first session is simply an opportunity to experience it for yourself without expectation. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give ourselves is permission to pause.
